GM Recalls Some ’12 Cadillac CTS Over Braking Issue

General Motors Co. is recalling 674 2012 Cadillac CTS vehicles after it discovered some vehicles had improperly assembled components that could cause the loss of braking ability.

GM said some vehicles have a power vacuum brake boost pushrod retention nut that was not properly tightened; the nut could loosen and allow the pushrod to separate from the brake pedal, reported The Detroit News.

On Oct. 28, GM discovered the problem and issued a stop-sale the following day for the 2012 CTS vehicles, which means they couldn’t be sold before they were inspected and repaired if necessary.

GM spokesman Alan Adler said Friday no crashes or injuries had been reported because of the condition and that most of the vehicles being recalled were still at dealerships or on their way to dealerships.

GM dealers will inspect the vehicles and if necessary tighten the nuts. GM notified owners and dealers on Nov. 1.

Harley to Recall More than 308,000 Motorcycles

DETROIT – Harley-Davidson Inc. is recalling about 308,000 motorcycles to fix a switch problem that can cause failure of the brake lights and possibly even the rear brakes themselves.

The company said in documents filed last week with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that brake light switches can be exposed to too much heat from the exhaust system, reported The Detroit News. The heat can cause the brake lights to fail, and the problem also can cause fluid leaks and the loss of rear brakes, the documents said.

The problem affects Touring, CVO Touring and Trike motorcycles from the 2009 through 2012 model years. They were built between June 6, 2008 and Sept. 16, 2011.

Harley says it will notify owners of the recall. Dealers will install a rear brake light switch kit free of charge.

The recall affects about 251,000 motorcycles in the U.S. alone, with the balance in other countries.

Harley said it noticed the problem in June of 2010 when it got a report of a Trike model motorcycle that lost its rear brakes due to the problem. The company began investigating, and in July of 2010, it sent investigators to a dealership in Louisiana to inspect another bike that was involved in a crash.

Harley has not determined yet if the problem caused the Louisiana crash, which injured one person, company spokeswoman Maripat Blankenheim said Monday. She did not know how seriously the person was hurt, but said Harley is not aware of any other crashes or injuries.

Harley said in the documents that there have been no more reports of the problem occurring since July of 2010.

The company also said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it expects the recall to cost $10 million to $12 million, which will be charged as an expense in the fourth quarter.

6,872 Mercedes-Benz Diesel Vehicles Recalled

Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz unit is issuing its second recall in the last two year to address leaking fuel filters in diesel vehicles.

The company said in documents posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it is recalling 6,872 vehicles, according to The Detroit News.

The new recall includes diesel versions of the 2011 E-Class, 2012 S-Class, 2011 R-Class, 2011 ML-Class and 2011 GL-Class.

The diesel fuel filter has an a seal that can leak around the heating component.

In October, Daimler recalled 2,297 2011 diesel vehicles for the same problem. Daimler made a change in the production process in June after it received a number of field reports in Europe of leaking fuel.

But after the recall, Daimler continued to receive a number of further complaints – and made another production change.

The recall will begin next month and dealers will replace the diesel fuel filter if necessary. The company estimates less than 1 percent of recalled vehicles will need to be fixed.

Toyota Recalls 308,000 Vehicles To Fix Airbags

Toyota Motor Corp. says it will recall certain 2007 and 2008 RAV4 and 2008 Highlander SUVs sold in the U.S. because of a problem that could cause unwanted airbag deployments.

The flaw stems from the vehicles’ roll-sensing airbag systems that are designed to protect occupants in a rollover crash, reported The Wall Street Journal. Toyota says the roll sensing curtain shield airbag system has two sensors that detect the vehicle’s roll angle. If one of these sensors malfunctions, the airbag warning light illuminates and the roll-detection system stops working. In such cases the airbag will still activate in a side-impact collision, Toyota says.

More troubling is the possibility of the bags deploying inadvertently, which could happen if both sensors fail “nearly simultaneously” after the initial airbag system check.

The company says no other Lexus or Toyota models are involved in this recall and this particular problem involves only vehicles sold in North America. Vehicles in other markets don’t have the roll-sensing airbag system.

Under the recall, which affects about 214,000 RAV4s and 94,000 Highlanders, Toyota dealers will replace the sensor assembly free of charge. The company says the recall will begin next month.

Volkswagen Recalls Certain New Jettas To Fix Wiring

Volkswagen of America Inc. said today it is recalling certain 2011 Jetta models to fix a potential problem with the wiring of its anti-theft system and horn. The car maker says the recall affects 71,043 Jettas built between March of 2010 and March of 2011.

The company says the problem stems from the a fuse that protects the car’s anti-theft alarm and the converter box that operates the windshield wipers and headlights. Under certain rare circumstances a short circuit in the horn can cause the lights and wipers to stop working, which could increase the risk of a crash, reported The Wall Street Journal.

The recall is a glitch in the roll-out of a vehicle whose success is critical to Volkswagen. The auto giant reworked the Jetta for 2011 with the goal of making the car appealing to a wider audience, in part by cutting its price. Critics including some longtime Jetta fans said Volkswagen’s redesign took some of the fun and a lot of the quality out of the car. Volkswagen says the car is an all-around improvement over past versions.

Under the recall, dealer service technicians will reconfigure the wiring layout so that the horn and converter box do not share the same fuse. The company says no injuries or accidents have been reported as a result of the flaw.

Honda Recalls Minivans In U.S. For Possible Power Window Problem

DETROIT – Honda Motor Co. is recalling 2,800 of its Odyssey minivans to repair potentially faulty windows.

There is a potential failure with the driver and front-passenger door power windows in the affected 2011 models in which the window may come off the track and become inoperative or drop into the door, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website, reported Reuters.

The window may shatter into the passenger cabin, so Honda is replacing those windows, NHTSA said. The recall is expected to begin on or before April 15.

No crashes or injuries have been reported related to the defect, Honda said.

Earlier this month, Honda recalled more than 33,000 2011 Odyssey minivans due to a possible windshield wiper defect.
